Two Cases of Leukemoid Reaction Associated with Non -Hematologic Malignancies

Abstract
Leukemoid reaction is defined as extreme elevation of the leukocyte count that can be
confused with leukemia. We experienced two cases of leukemoid reaction associated with
non-hematologic malignancies. The first case was a 53-year-old female who was
presented with dyspnea and yellowish sputum with granyulocytic leukocytosis (58,
400/ul). Underlying malignancy was undifferenciated large cell carcinoma of the lung.
The second case was a 69-year-old female who was presented with a large, hard mass
on the anterior neck. She had had the history of previous operation of thyroidectomy.
Her leukocyte count was 84,000/ul with mature form of neutrophils. Shortly after
subtotal thyroidectomy, leukocyte count dropped to 8,200/u1. Histologic diagnosis was
undifferenciated, giant cell carcinoma of the thyroid.
